Every airline at O'Hare, A to Z

Every airline at O'Hare from A to Z with its terminal and check-in, including United, which checks in at Terminals 1 and 2.

Most of O’Hare’s airlines are in Terminal 5, Delta among them. American is in Terminal 3, and United checks in at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Every airline checks in at its terminal. All but Avelo and Southern Airways Express check in on the Departures and Check-In level, and United does so in both of its terminals. For Avelo and Southern, the airport’s airline directory gives a terminal and nothing about the level.

The table has 48 airlines: the 47 in the airport’s airline directory, plus Philippine Airlines, which the airport’s terminal map puts at a Terminal 5 check-in. The directory names a terminal for each of its airlines but doesn’t say which flights use it, so your boarding pass or your airline’s flight status has the final word. The airport’s flight search can filter by terminal, and the airport says its terminal and gate data come from a third-party service, so check with your carrier for the latest. If your airline isn’t in the table, ask the airline, because the flight search shows a terminal only for the flights it has listed.

Extras at check-in:

  • Air Canada has a separate customer service desk on the Terminal 2 Departures and Check-In level.
  • American has separate international, Priority and Flagship counters, self check-in kiosks on both levels and curbside check-in.
  • Delta has self-service kiosks and curbside check-in.

In Terminal 5, the airport’s map says most ticketing counters are common use, so your carrier’s counter may not be in the exact spot marked on the map. Your airline can tell you which counter is yours on the day.

United has a lobby in each of two terminals

Terminal 1 has a United lobby on the Departures and Check-In level, with Polaris check-in, Premier Access and Economy bag drops and an agent assistance desk. A group check-in desk is on the Terminal 1 Arrivals level. United has a lobby in Terminal 2 as well, and the airport’s directory and map differ on it. The airport’s airline directory lists United at Terminal 1 for departures and Terminal 5 for international arrivals, with no Terminal 2. The airport’s terminal map shows a United lobby in Terminal 2, and our own listing has United checking in there too. The airport doesn’t say which United flights use which lobby, so the terminal on your boarding pass decides. The Terminal 1 guide and Terminal 2 guide cover the checkpoints behind each lobby.

Where an airline checks in isn’t always where its international flights land

The airport says international passengers arrive at Terminal 5 and clear U.S. customs there, so a flight from abroad can arrive at a different terminal from the one its airline checks in at. The airport’s airline directory lists Terminal 5 for arrivals beside the departure terminal for seven airlines. American, British Airways, Iberia and Japan Airlines depart from Terminal 3, and United, Lufthansa and All Nippon Airways from Terminal 1. For American and United it says international arrivals. Passengers from preclearance airports, which include several in Canada and Ireland, clear customs before they leave. The airport says they may go straight to the domestic baggage claim in Terminal 5, and that others from preclearance airports may arrive in Terminals 1, 2 or 3.

Changing airlines can mean changing terminals

The airport calls Terminals 1, 2 and 3 connected, so a change between United and American is a walk past security. Terminal 5 has no walking route to the others, so a change between either of them and Delta or any other Terminal 5 airline means the Airport Transit System or the Terminal Transfer Bus. The bus is for connecting passengers only and needs a same-day boarding pass for the flight you’re transferring to. The guide to changing between United or American and Delta has the steps for that change, and the walking guide covers the walk between Terminals 1, 2 and 3.
